Montero rules out the tax on large supermarkets requested by Unidas Podemos

MADRID, 15 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Minister of Finance and Public Function, María Jesús Montero, has ruled out this Thursday the request of Unidas Podemos to implement an extraordinary tax on the benefits of large distribution, with a rate of 33% on their profit margins, within the package of measures to face the consequences of the war in Ukraine.

"We have already developed fiscal policy in the package of measures. At this moment, the Ministry of Finance is not considering any additional (fiscal) measure (...) There is currently no intention of imposing a tax," he said. underlined Montero, in statements to Antena 3 collected by Europa Press.

The Minister of Finance has explained that dialogue is being held with the food and distribution sector so that, if measures are taken, they do not affect the price of products sold to citizens.

"In a few days, we will present it, once we choose which one best suits what we want: the protection of the majority of the citizens of this country, with special interest in the most vulnerable people," he said.

Montero has affirmed that the Government wants to protect the middle and working class and "focus" on the shopping basket, which is now where "inflation is hitting more insistently" after the moderation in energy prices and the fuels.

The minister stressed that the drop in the year-on-year inflation rate in November to 6.8% shows that the measures adopted by the Executive to combat rising prices are going in the right direction and recalled that, in "a few days", the Government will communicate which of these measures are extended, which are leaving and which are entering.

"The measures adopted have allowed us a certain price control and now we are reviewing all of these measures", reiterated the minister, who added that, with regard to the universal bonus of 20 euro cents per liter of fuel , "the decision is being rushed until the last day" to know exactly how the price of oil will evolve.
