Montreal: the mayor of Saint-Laurent hospitalized

The mayor of the Montreal borough of Saint-Laurent, Michel Bissonnet, will have to spend the next two weeks recovering from illness.

“Although his life is not in danger, Mr. Bissonnet is currently being kept under observation in a hospital in the metropolis. He will then continue his recovery at home,” the borough briefly announced on Monday.

80-year-old Michel Bissonnet has been at the head of the borough of Saint-Laurent since 2008, when he was elected with Mayor Gérald Tremblay's team in a by-election.

Mr. Bissonnet has since remained at the head of the borough, as part of the Ensemble Montréal team, where he also serves as spokesperson for government relations.

Before entering municipal politics, Michel Bissonnet represented voters in the riding of Jeanne-Mance, then Jeanne-Mance–Viger, for more than 27 years in the National Assembly as a Liberal deputy. He was also President of the National Assembly from 2003 to 2008.

In his absence, Deputy Mayor Angela Gentile and the other members of Borough Council will take over from him. The functioning of the borough should not be disrupted, it was specified.
