Montrealers happy to reconnect with the heat

Montrealers were rejoicing today in the first big heat wave since the beginning of June, which almost broke a record: a taste of what the second half of the summer should hold for us.

"In Montreal itself, it's the hottest day of the year so far [...] People were looking forward to this heat, even if it was a little uncomfortable," says Patrick Duplessis, meteorologist at MeteoMedia.

In the metropolis, the mercury rose to 32.4°C.

Despite the stifling heat reaching 41°C with the Humidex factor, La Fontaine Park in Montreal was teeming with life in the afternoon.

While children filled their water guns from the water troughs, many groups were basking in the shade, taking advantage of the breeze to cool off a bit.

"It's a little cooler in the park than back home. Just crossing the street, with the body of water, you can feel a difference. It's a good time in good company,” rejoices Sylvie, 52, sitting in the shade with her partner and a couple of friends, as well as her old dog Sammy.

Rather, Benjamin Chamberland, 24, and Zoé Liberali, 23, saw it as an ideal opportunity to try out a new creamery near their home.

“Inside, the humidity remains, so it feels good to get out and get some fresh air. It really is a beautiful day,” rejoices Mr. Chamberland, his sweet vanilla and raspberry flavored dessert in hand.

But this hot flash was only temporary and the temperature is expected to be milder on Monday, with a few drops of rain expected in the coming days. However, we should see the sun daily, specifies the meteorologist. A rise in mercury comparable to today's is nonetheless forecast for July 1st.

Attention movers

"It won't please the movers. If there's a day when you don't want it to be too hot, that's it," he said.

On this subject, Urgences-Santé advises avoiding extreme efforts during these hot periods to prevent heat stroke. If this is not possible, take lots of breaks in the shade or in the cool and rehydrate regularly.
