NBC Universal employee secretly videotaped in bathroom on studio lot

A fired preschool teacher is under investigation after he allegedly videotaped a woman using a restroom at a day care center on the NBC Universal lot in Universal City.

The alleged victim, who is an employee of NBC Universal, reported the incident to her supervisor Wednesday. The woman said she was using an adult restroom at a day care center on the studio lot and discovered she was being secretly recorded.

The case was turned over to the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division, which is now investigating.

Television station KNBC Channel 4, which is owned by NBC Universal, originally reported that the suspect is a male preschool teacher at a third-party vendor child care center for employees on the NBC Universal lot.

The alleged culprit was detained for further investigation but was not arrested, and the investigation continues, LAPD officials said Friday.

Bridget M. Perry, a spokeswoman for Bright Horizons day care, said in an email exchange Friday that a cellphone was left in the restroom and recorded the woman without her knowledge.

After the incident, Perry said parents were immediately notified.

The phone was later tracked back to the preschool teacher, and he was fired, Perry noted.

“As soon as this situation was brought to our attention, we reported it to the Los Angeles Police Department, and we will support them in any way we can while they investigate,” Perry said. “We have communicated directly with all the families and our staff at the center, and the individual involved is not returning.”

Bright Horizons, according to its website, is an early education and preschool facility that runs Universal Studios Child Care.

Employees of KNBC 4, the station reported, have access to the child care center.

LAPD Detective Daniel Aguirre would not comment directly on the case because the incident was an “open investigation.”

Anyone with information on the crime is encouraged to contact Aguirre at 213-486-6910.
