Networking event: public organizations turn their backs on the Conférence de Montréal

Several state corporations and public bodies, which for years have been major sponsors of the Conference of Montreal, have decided to reduce their support for the 2022 edition of the event, which ended on Wednesday.

Investissement Québec (IQ), the Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF), Library and National Archives of Québec as well as the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) have all ceased to support the Conference of Montreal, we note by consulting the program of the event.

Plus a cent from the AMF and IQ

For the AMF, this is a significant change: for several years, the regulatory body acted as a "prestige partner" of the Conference of Montreal, which cost it $150,000 per edition.

For its part, IQ donated $85,000 to the event in 2019, $50,000 in 2020 and around $25,000 in 2021.

"This year's conference did not fit with the business objectives of Investissement Québec," commented a spokesperson for the Crown corporation, Dominik Boudreault Lapierre.

Hydro and the Fund less generous

The Caisse de dépôt and Hydro-Québec, two other major sponsors of the Conférence de Montréal, reduced their contributions from $150,000 to $115,000 and from $100,000 to $80,000, respectively.

On the other hand, the governments of Quebec and Canada have maintained their contributions, which amount to $400,000 and $525,000 respectively. That of the City of Montreal went from $130,000 to $140,000.

This edition of the Conference of Montreal has received just over $1.5 million in contributions from governments and public organizations based in Quebec. In 2020, it was almost $1.7 million.

Recall that in 2019, more than half of the budget of the Conference of Montreal had been assumed by governments and public institutions, according to a compilation made at the time by Le Journal.

The Montreal conglomerate Power Corporation has been the title sponsor of the event for several years.
