A fire in a six-storey apartment building killed one person in the borough of Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, in Montreal, very early Monday.

The fire started around 3 a.m. in an apartment on the 4th floor of the Habitations Côte-des-Neige residential building, located on Gatineau Avenue, near Jean-Brillant Street.

Firefighters from the Montreal Fire Department (SIM) were able to quickly bring the flames under control, after setting off a second alarm.

The occupants were mostly evacuated, some of whom just left the floor where the fire started, a SIM spokeswoman said.

The body of the occupant of the apartment where the fire started was discovered unresponsive by the firefighters who transferred the file to the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM).

At this stage of the investigation, the Montreal police cannot reveal the identity or the sex of the victim and there is no element to conclude that there was a fire of an arson nature, it was added.
