Factory orders in Germany registered a 0.4% drop last April in relation to the previous month, when they had fallen 10.9%, their biggest monthly drop since April 2020, when restrictions were implemented to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

However, excluding large orders, there was an increase of 1.4% compared to March, when they were down 7.7% compared to the previous month.

Likewise, in year-on-year terms, new orders from German industry experienced a decline of 9.9% in April, after the year-on-year fall of 11.2% observed in March.

The German statistical office underlined the very different developments of the economic sectors within the manufacturing industry, since in the machinery and equipment manufacturing sector they decreased by 6.2% per month and in the vehicle construction sector the fall was 34%.

In contrast, the electrical material manufacturing sector increased its new orders by 12% per month, while the motor vehicle, trailer and semi-trailer manufacturing sector increased by 2.4%.

Likewise, while new orders in the consumer goods sector decreased by 2.5% and in the capital goods sector by 1.7% compared to the previous month, new orders in the intermediate goods sector increased by 2 ,3%.

Domestic orders rose 1.6%, while foreign orders plunged 1.8% from the previous month. Here, new orders from the rest of the world fell by 1.1% and orders from the euro area by 2.7%.
