Perfumes and beauty creams will be the most stolen products in 2023 and robberies in supermarkets and retail stores will grow next year, according to a survey conducted by Aecoc and Checkpoint Systems among the main security directors in Spain.

More than 61% of those surveyed ranked perfumes and beauty creams as the products most susceptible to theft given their small size and high value. Mobile accessories are next on the list, thanks to their high demand in the resale market.

Fresh produce (meats and cheeses) and wines and other alcoholic beverages are the foods that face the highest risk of theft, according to respondents, especially now with the arrival of Christmas celebrations. Thus, this study reveals that 27.6% of all annual robberies occur in winter alone.

"Traditional Christmas shopping multiplies the flow of customers in stores, which overloads traditional security systems and increases the risk of theft," acknowledged Emanuele Soncin, Checkpoint's business unit manager. Systems in Spain.

Almost 80% of the anti-theft experts consulted for this study state that technology plays an essential role in improving product safety and consider that the key point for theft prevention is at the checkout line.

However, experts acknowledge that implementing these anti-theft mechanisms could cause problems in the customer's shopping experience. To avoid this, the most innovative anti-theft antennas guarantee a wide access to establishments and RFID technology allows inventories to be carried out more quickly and efficiently.

The Crime Balance of the Ministry of the Interior revealed that there were more than 306,000 thefts in the first half of 2022, 44.6% more than in the same period of the previous year. In this way, theft is the most common crime in Spain, far behind the second most frequent, home robbery.
