A motorist lost control of his car before mowing down a police officer and a construction worker on Monday morning in the Saint-Michel district of Montreal.

The collision occurred around 10:30 a.m. at the corner of boulevard Crémazie and boulevard Saint-Michel, a very busy area, in particular due to the presence of a road construction site and the closure of traffic lanes.

For a reason still unknown, the driver of the car allegedly lost control and successively hit a police officer assigned to traffic flow and one of the site workers.

The vehicle ended its race with only two wheels on the ground, climbed on a concrete wall.

The 40-year-old police officer suffered a leg injury, while the worker, also in his 40s, suffered more serious injuries.

They were both taken to hospital, but their lives are not believed to be in danger, authorities confirmed.

The driver behind the accident, a man in his 50s, was not injured. He was to be met by SPVM investigators to give his version of the facts.

A portion of boulevard Crémazie and boulevard Saint-Michel was closed to traffic for a few hours to allow collision investigation specialists to do their job.
