A Polk County jail employee was arrested Thursday after having sex with an inmate that led to her giving birth to a child, officials said.

The affair stems back to December 2015 when Vanquisia McGill, 21, let Johnathan Lott, 20, out of his cell at the South County Jail in the Frostproof area, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

While other workers were serving meals to inmates, McGill led Lott to a control room where she was working so they could have sex, said Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Carrie Horstman.

The control room manages the locks for all cells and also has keys and weapons, an arrest affidavit said.

While in the control room, deputies say Lott had access that put other jail workers and inmates in danger.

The next month Lott was sentenced to 25 years in connection to a deadly crash. In February, he was transferred to the Santa Rosa Correctional Institution in northern Florida but their relationship didn’t stop, Horstman said.

The pair talked frequently on the phone and in September, McGill gave birth to their child, giving the baby his last name and listing him as the father on the birth certificate, Horstman said.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office recently found out about the relationship and started investigating.

McGill, who was hired in October 2014, resigned from her post as a clerk at the jail after deputies say she confessed to the affair.

She is facing charges of sexual misconduct between detention facility employees and inmates, interference with county prisoners and culpable negligence.
