Saint-Hyacinthe: a pedestrian fatally hit by a truck

A 65-year-old pedestrian died after being hit by a truck and being stuck under it for several minutes on Thursday morning in the heart of downtown Saint-Hyacinthe.

The accident occurred around 9:30 a.m., at the corner of rue des Cascades Ouest and avenue de la Concorde Nord.

According to the authorities, the heavyweight carrying a load of several tons made a left turn to enter Avenue de la Concorde Nord when the pedestrian was crossing the street.

Following the impact, the truck driver immobilized his vehicle while the victim's legs were trapped under the wheels.

A delicate operation was set in motion to lift the truck to free the woman.

The latter was at this time conscious and she was even able to speak with the emergency responders who were trying to help her.

Unfortunately, the pedestrian fell into cardiorespiratory arrest when the dump truck was finally able to be lifted.

The victim was rushed to hospital and resuscitation maneuvers were underway to bring him back to life.

His death was pronounced shortly thereafter.

A traffic light is present at this intersection, but it has been deactivated to improve the flow of traffic in the area, where roadworks are making life difficult for motorists.

Only red flashers are active, so people must come to a complete stop before driving off.

According to our information, the truck driver did not come to a complete stop before making his turn.

The authorities do not rule out that criminal charges may be brought in this case.

The intersection where the tragedy occurred was closed to traffic to allow Sûreté du Québec accident scene reconstruction specialists to conduct their investigation.
