Sales of sports equipment will increase up to 5% in 2022, reaching 7,000 million euros

MADRID, 15 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Sales of sports equipment will increase an additional 4-5% at the end of 2022, reaching a turnover of 7,000 million euros, according to forecasts by the DBK Sector Observatory of Informa.

However, the growth of the sector's billing this year has been limited by the reduction in the purchasing power of the population due to the inflationary crisis.

Retail sales of sports equipment invoiced 6,700 million euros in 2021, 13.6% more than the previous year. The reactivation of private consumption, after the contraction of 10.6% experienced in 2020, and the growing tendency to practice sports are the main drivers of this increase.

Specialized sports stores account for 89% of the total turnover of the sector and recorded revenues of 5,950 million euros in 2021 (14.2%), while large stores billed close to 750 million (8.7%).

The expansion of large stores, sometimes through the acquisition of other businesses, has led to a greater degree of business concentration in the sector. The first five operators added a market share of 54% in 2021, while the top ten gathered almost 66% of the total.

The number of establishments specialized in the sale of sports equipment fell in January 2022 to 8,656, continuing the downward trend of recent months caused by the lower offer of traditional commerce.
