Sales of the service sector rose 20.1% in September and chained 19 months of promotions

The services sector increased its turnover by 20.1% in September compared to the same month of 2021, moderating the rise registered the previous month by three points, as reported on Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

With the advance in September, the services chain 19 consecutive months of year-on-year increases after a year of falls as a result of the pandemic.

Within services, the greatest increases in sales were registered by administrative activities and auxiliary services (33.7%) and hospitality (accommodation services and food and beverage services), which increased its turnover by 21.9% year-on-year .

Specifically, accommodation services increased their sales by 37%, while food and beverage services billed 14.5% more than in September 2021.

By activities, the greatest increases in sales were registered by travel agencies and tour operators, which doubled them (112.4%), and air transport, which increased them by 95.5%.

In monthly terms and in seasonally and calendar-adjusted data, the services sector registered a monthly increase in sales of 0.9% in September, compared to growth of 2.1% in the previous month.

For the eighteenth consecutive month and after more than a year of falls, employment in the services sector grew in September, and it did so at an interannual rate of 3.3%, a rate four tenths lower than that of August.

The Balearic Islands was the community that increased job creation in the services sector the most last September, with an interannual rise of 9%, and also the region that increased sales the most, 40.7% in the interannual rate.
