Again weakened by illness, the Minister of International Relations and La Francophonie Nadine Girault must retire from her duties and announces that she will not seek a new mandate next October. Minister Andrée Laforest will act as interim minister.

“On the recommendation of her doctor, the Minister of International Relations and La Francophonie, Nadine Girault, announces a temporary suspension of her functions. During the absence of Ms. Girault, the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Andrée Laforest, will take charge of the files of this ministry, ”said his cabinet in a press release.

She also announces that she is retiring from political life at the end of her mandate. She says she is very proud to have appointed several competent women to represent Quebec abroad.

“We have reached the parity zone within our delegations. Diplomacy has often been mentioned as a domain of men. It was a point of honor for me to reverse this idea, ”she said in a second missive.

“It was an honor for me to represent you in the National Assembly of Quebec. I am happy to have been able to maintain such a beautiful closeness with all of you.

The Prime Minister underlined the good work of Ms. Girault in her office and the Minister's passion for Quebec.

“The economic shift she piloted in Quebec's international delegations is a good example. By promoting Quebec's economy, it has left its mark for years to come. I am very proud to have been able to count on her in my team,” he said.

Lung cancer

In the summer of 2019, Nadine Girault was diagnosed with lung cancer, a disease that forced her to rest for a few weeks.

Then, in November 2021, she had to be absent for several months due to a series of treatments which had greatly weakened her.
