Former politician André Boisclair took charge of the prison on Monday after being sentenced to two years less a day for two cases of sexual assault to which he had pleaded guilty.

The 56-year-old, however, had made headlines a few times before his arrest for the crimes.

Here are five important dates in the forfeiture of André Boisclair:

May 2007 – He resigns as leader of the PQ

Elected leader of the Parti Québécois (PQ) in November 2005, André Boisclair resigned from this role in May 2007 after losing the support of a large number of members of his caucus.

September 2013 – He asks to be relieved of his duties as Delegate General of Quebec in New York.

André Boisclair was appointed Québec Delegate General in New York in November 2012.

He asked to be temporarily relieved of his duties on September 27, 2013, in particular because of allegations related to the consumption of drugs at the official residence of the delegation.

January 2014 – Sexual assault with the participation of a person

The first sexual assault for which the ex-politician pleaded guilty would have taken place in January 2014.

November 2015 - Sexual Assault

The second sexual assault for which André Boisclair pleaded guilty took place in November 2015.

May 2020- Arrest of André Boisclair

June 20, 2022 – Guilty plea

André Boisclair pleaded guilty to two charges of sexual assault. The Defense and the Crown then suggested a joint sentence of two years less a day in prison.

André Boisclair's lawyer indicated that his client had resolved his drug use problem in therapy and that he did not want to amplify the suffering of the victims with long legal proceedings.

July 18, 2022- Award

The judge endorsed the suggestion of lawyers for both parties and sentenced André Boisclair to a sentence of two years less a day.
