The national electricity demand experienced a decrease of 1.3% in August with respect to the same month of the previous year, after discounting the effects of temperature and working hours. In gross terms, a demand of 21,765 GWh is estimated, 1.1% lower than that of August 2022.

In the accumulated of the year, Spain registered a demand of 164,232 GWh, 4.1% less than in the first eight months of 2022, although, once the effects of the calendar and temperatures were taken into account, the demand fell by 3, 5% compared to the same period of 2022.

In the month of August, renewables generated 14.8% more than in the same month of 2022, adding 10,965 GWh, representing a share of 46.4% of the total.

In total, 68.6% of the month's electricity production came from technologies that do not emit CO2 equivalent.

In the first eight months of 2023, renewable energy production grew by 13.8% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Solar photovoltaic registered a production of 4,389 GWh in August, 35.3% more than in the same period of the previous year. In the generation structure, it accounted for 18.6%, being for the third consecutive month the leading source of renewable generation in Spain.

Wind generation in August was 4,325 GWh and accounted for 18.3% of total production, remaining the first technology in the mix for the year with a share of 22.3%.

For its part, hydraulics produced 9.6% more in August than in the same month of 2022 and accounted for 1,065 GWh, reaching a share of 4.5% of the total.

In the peninsular electricity system, the demand in August was 1.4% lower than in August 2022, taking into account the effects of working hours and temperatures. In gross terms, a demand of 20,199 GWh was registered, 1.4% less than in the same month of 2022.

In the first eight months of the year, demand on the peninsula was 154,075 GWh, 4.3% less than that registered in 2022. Once the effects of working hours and temperatures were taken into account, demand fell by 3.6% .

Renewables as a whole generated 48% of the peninsular total in the month and 71.7% came from technologies that do not emit equivalent CO2.

In August, the participation of solar photovoltaics on the peninsula also stands out, reaching third place in the generation structure, with a share of 19.4% in the 'mix' of all technologies, generating a total of 4,312 GWh .

In August, in the Balearic Islands, electricity demand fell by 5.5% once the effects of work and temperatures were taken into account. In gross terms, monthly demand is estimated at 708,974 MWh, 2.7% lower than that registered in August 2022.

In the first eight months of 2023, Balearic gross demand reached 4,144,809 MWh, 1.8% less than in the same period of the previous year.

As for generation, the combined cycle, with 63.8% of the energy produced in the Balearic Islands, was the first source of the islands in August. For its part, renewable energy without equivalent CO2 emissions generated in the Balearic Community represents 11% of the total.

In addition, during this month, the submarine link between the Peninsula and Majorca contributed to cover 24.6% of the Balearic electricity demand.

On the other hand, in the Canary Islands, the demand for electrical energy, once the working hours and temperatures have been taken into account, increased by 6.2% compared to the same month of the previous year. In gross terms, demand stood at 816,547 MWh, 7.8% higher.

In the accumulated year of 2023, the gross demand of the Canary Islands is estimated at 5,748,620 MWh, 1.7% more than in the same period of 2022.

Regarding electricity generation in the Canary Islands, the combined cycle, with 39.4% of the total, was also the first source in the month of August, while renewables and emission-free technologies represented 26.8% of the total. production, with the contribution of wind power being 22.3%.
