Despite two changes of opponents in recent weeks, Mathieu Germain used patience against the arrogant Misael Cabrera Urias to obtain an important victory by decision, Thursday at the Casino de Montreal.

The judges returned scores of 96-94, 97-93 and 99-91 for the local favorite, who inflicted a first defeat on his vis-à-vis.

From the first round, “G-Time” seemed to be shaken by a well-placed strike. But a few clashes in the second then got the better of Urias' smirk (12-1-0, 9 KOs). Looking for the winning move afterwards, the Mexican however came up against the endurance of Germain (21-2-1, 9 K.-O.).

Game plan

Boxing fans will also have to get used to seeing him use patience. A game plan signed Stéphan Larouche to which he is gradually adapting.

“That was the plan, explained Germain a few moments after his duel. [Stéphan] wanted us to take him to school to show him that I was an experienced boxer. He had never done [a fight of] 10 rounds. Stéphan wanted us to wait at the beginning, which is not my habit. But I didn't want to take any risks and I took my time."

Urias was indeed playing his first game away from Mexico and had not put on the gloves since June 26, 2021. Despite his stellar record, he has rarely faced opponents at the top of their game.

It was Germain's third victory since losing to Junior Ulysse. He is now expected to face a tougher pugilist the next time he steps into the ring, with the goal of climbing the world rankings. According to Michel, the career of the 32-year-old veteran boxer has indeed reached a turning point.
