The sale of homes rises 6.6% in January, up to its highest figure in 15 years

The purchase and sale of homes registered an increase of 6.6% in January compared to the previous year, up to a total of 56,372 operations, the highest figure in a month of January since 2008, when more than 61,800 purchases and sales were carried out, according to reported this Tuesday the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

With this year-on-year rise, the sale of homes returns to positive rates after falling by 10.2% in December 2022 and putting an end to 21 consecutive months of year-on-year increases.

The increase in the sale of homes in January was due to both the increase in operations on second-hand apartments and the increase in the sale of new homes.

Specifically, the sale of used homes increased by 6.2% in the first month of the year, to a total of 45,501 operations, while the transactions carried out on new apartments rose by 8%, to 10,871 operations.

91.7% of the homes transferred by sale in January were free homes and 8.3% were protected. In total, the sale of private homes rose 6.3% year-on-year, to 51,719 operations, while the sale of subsidized homes increased 9.7%, to a total of 4,653 transactions.

On a month-on-month basis (January 2023 over December 2022), home sales soared 30%, its biggest rise in a month of January since 2020, when it rose 35%.
