The turnover of the industry increased an average of 20.6% in 2022, its biggest rise since 2002, when the series began, according to data released this Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

In this way, industry sales chain two consecutive years of increases after the 16.1% increase they registered in 2021. In 2020, the first year of the pandemic, they sank 11.7%.

The increase in industry billing in 2022 was the result of the increases registered in all sectors, especially in energy (80.8%), followed by intermediate goods (17.8%); non-durable consumer goods (16.9%); durable consumer goods (13.6%) and capital goods (10.6%).

The branches where sales rose the most in 2022 were coke ovens and petroleum refining (80.8%); the manufacture of jewelry, costume jewelery and musical instruments (31.3%); the manufacture of motorcycles and bicycles (27.9%) and the manufacture of milling products, starch and animal feed (25.9%).

On the opposite side, the only branch of activity where sales decreased last year was the tobacco industry, with a 1.7% drop in turnover.

Adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects, industry billing increased by an average of 21.4% in 2021, with energy leading the rise (80%).

In December 2022, the industry increased its sales by 8.6% year-on-year, a rate 4.5 points lower than that of November. With the year-on-year rise in December, the most moderate since October 2021, the sector has chained 22 consecutive months of rises.

In a monthly rate (December 2022 compared to November of the same year), industry billing fell by 0.4%, in contrast to the monthly rise of 3.6% registered in November.
