The suspects, aged between 23 and 25, were met by investigators before being released on conditions.

They face charges of fraud over $5,000, conspiracy and personation.

Laval police conducted a search on Wednesday in a residence that served as a "call center" for the quartet.

At the scene, law enforcement seized 18 cell phones, just over $13,000 in cash and four vehicles as offence-related property.

“The investigation brought together 187 files across Quebec for fraud totaling more than $900,000,” Laval police said in a statement.

As in most “grandparent” type fraud cases, an initial suspect contacted the victim posing as his grandson and mentioned being in trouble with the authorities.

“He pretended to need money to be released from prison. During the telephone conversation, a second suspect then impersonated a police officer or a lawyer. He told the victim the procedure to follow so that she could go and withdraw the money which she had to hide in an envelope and then give it to a suspect who was to come to her home to recover it, ”detailed the police. of Laval.

What adds to the misfortune of all these defrauded seniors is that they may never see the color of their money again. Indeed, authorities have said that since the victims "withdrew money of their own free will", they are held responsible by their financial institution and therefore will not be reimbursed.
