Tips sought: Audi flees I-78 traffic stop at 125-plus mph

A traffic stop for speeding Saturday evening on Interstate 78 in Lehigh County quickly became a high-speed pursuit as the driver sped off from the shoulder, police said.

Pennsylvania State Police at Fogelsville said Monday they were looking for information on the vehicle or the identity of the driver.

The incident occurred about 6:40 p.m. on I-78 East in Weisenberg Township, as a trooper was using a handheld radar gun to monitor speeds from alongside the highway, according to a news release.

Trooper Stephen DeAngeles observed a silver Audi sedan pass by at 82 mph, in a 55 mph zone, and pulled onto the highway in pursuit, the release states.

The vehicle swerved from the left lane in front of a tractor-trailer traveling in the right lane before pulling over onto the shoulder with its hazard lights on, police said.

The trooper pulled up behind the car with the patrol car's emergency lights activated, as the Audi continued to drive on the shoulder at a slow speed without coming to a stop, police said. The trooper hit the siren, and the sedan pulled back onto the highway.

Police pursued the fleeing car as it changed lanes without signaling and was clocked at speeds over 125 mph, the release states. The driver drove onto the left center median to pass a vehicle in the left lane before crossing a middle lane and continuing into the far right lane of Route 22 East at the highways' split in Upper Macungie Township and continuing east.

Police ended the pursuit, but are continuing to investigate.

Police ask anyone with information on the incident, vehicle or driver to contact DeAngeles at 610-395-1438. The incident number to reference is PA2017-11635.
