Tornado alert: Severe thunderstorm hit Alberta on Thursday

Many homes in central Alberta were damaged Thursday by a severe thunderstorm that injured one person, Global News reported.

Contacted by the English media, Corporal Gina Slaney, spokesperson for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), explained that five houses in the Sundre region were damaged.

Only one house was destroyed, however, said Ms. Slaney.

While no details are available as to who was injured, Corporal Slaney said it was only a minor injury caused by debris that fell after the storm.

Police and a team of firefighters went to check that everyone was safe where the storm hit the hardest.

In addition, many roads were closed due to debris and fallen trees in the way. These have all been reopened, said Gina Slaney.

Recall that Environment Canada issued, on Thursday, a severe storm warning in several regions of Alberta. It was around 2:47 p.m. that the federal agency confirmed the formation of a tornado in the Shantz region.

By Thursday evening, Environment Canada had still not confirmed whether the tornado had indeed made landfall.
