New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Thursday slammed the UN's "failure" to prevent war in Ukraine, and accused Russia of imposing its "morally corrupt" position on the Security Council.

Ms. Ardern, who has long criticized the right of veto of the five permanent members of the Security Council (China, United States, France, United Kingdom, Russia), renewed her call for a reform of the United Nations.

The UN's 'failure' over Ukraine is due to Moscow's veto power, she told a talk at Sydney's Lowy Institute, a think tank, during of a visit to Australia.

According to her, Russia used its seat on the Security Council to impose “a morally corrupt position following a morally corrupt and illegal war”.

“We must reform the United Nations so that we do not have to rely on specific countries imposing their own sanctions,” she pleaded.
