John Corey McKay, a 52-year-old man, allegedly punched a police officer in the head through the open window of the vehicle door. Following the gesture, the police opened fire on the suspect who was injured and taken to hospital.

“The officer was not seriously injured and was able to continue his shift following the arrest of the suspect,” Vancouver Police Department spokeswoman Tania Visintin confirmed to the “Vancouver Sun”.

She added that one of the officers had first tried to subdue the suspect with a conducted energy weapon, but that it was ultimately with a firearm that he was neutralized.

Another officer also suffered minor injuries in the incident.
