Wintry mix in store for Sunday, with strong winds to follow

Freezing rain, some snow and ice are all in the mix for Sunday.

The wintry weather forecasted to start overnight will precede strong winds Sunday night into Monday, according to an advisory issued by the National Weather Service.

The precipitation should start as rain early Sunday across the Lehigh Valley region, but will cool to a mix by daybreak, the advisory says. It may turn back to rain by evening.

The area could see a dusting of snow -- less than an inch is expected -- and up to a tenth of an inch of ice with the likelihood increasing farther north.

The mix is part of a system that could dump more than a foot of snow in areas of New England into Monday, according to AccuWeather.

Following the precipitation will be strong gusts. The National Weather Service says winds of 5 to 10 mph during the day Sunday will strengthen to 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 50 mph on Monday.

Any of these conditions can lead to power outages or risky driving conditions, so forecasters are urging appropriate precautions.
