The Polytechnic University of Valencia has led the research process for a new cleaning formula that eliminates the by-products of one of the bacteria in the skin's microbiome, responsible for bad odour.

The emblematic Veles e Vents building has been the setting chosen for the presentation of the Sweataway brand, promoted by the entrepreneur Sandra Herrero. The new product has been patented in Spain and is the first specific detergent for sportswear, the result of more than four years of research by the Department of Chemistry of the Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Valencia and the Institute of Chemical Technology.

The presentation event included a talk by tennis player Álex Corretja, who shared with the audience the importance of balancing teamwork and leadership both in sports practice and in the business world. Among the attendees were Juan Miguel Gómez, director of the Trinidad Alfonso Foundation; the Valencian athlete Marta Fernández de Castro; the director of the Valencia 10k, Álex Aparicio and the president of the Les Abelles Rugby Club, among others. Numerous businessmen and executives also attended, such as Manuel de Prado, partner of Oquendo Corporate; Fátima Zamorano, CEO of Grupo AZA; Emi Boix, CEO of Emac; the lawyer Federico Varona and Pedro Dañobeitia, Senior Investment Advisor at Miralta Bank, as well as the university professors Hermenegildo García Gómez and Mercedes Álvaro.

scientific innovation

Hermenegildo García Gómez, professor at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, winner of the Jaume I award for new technologies (2016), and Enrique Moles National Research Award winner, has led the research: "traditional detergents do not make the smell of sweat and humidity disappear due to that bacteria nest in synthetic fabrics made to facilitate perspiration".

Sweataway fulfills three objectives: remove stains, act as a bactericide and take care of fabrics. It is effective in cleaning all types of clothing, footwear and accessories, although it has been specifically created to combat a common problem in technical clothing: persistent odour.

The founder of Sweataway Sandra Herrero highlighted that "Entrepreneurship has been a challenge that has put to the test many of the principles that I admire in practicing sports: goal orientation, perseverance, self-improvement and team spirit. I am confident that it will improve the lives of all sports fans taking care of the planet".

Thus, the brand's commitment to caring for the environment reaches three areas: it can reduce the turnover of sportswear by up to 50% thanks to its composition that protects fabrics and eliminates residual odours; its effectiveness in short programs with cold water reduces the carbon footprint in each wash thanks to a saving of 60% in electricity consumption and 50% in water. And, the packaging is 100% recycled, recyclable, reusable and contains no plastics.

One of the axes of the corporate social responsibility policy of the new firm is the inclusion of people with disabilities. For this reason, Sweataway has collaborated with ONCE in the design of its website to facilitate its universal accessibility and incorporates Braille into all its packaging.
