Costa Rica and Greece win the most desired countries and New Orleans and Dubrovnik are crowned as the favorite cities of Wanderlust readers

LONDON, Nov. 10, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- A country known around the world for its stunning beauty and for being a leader in sustainability, Costa Rica has been crowned by Wanderlust readers as the most desired country (rest of the world) by 2022.

On Tuesday, November 8, hundreds of the top travel industry leaders gathered at the Tower of London for the 21st Annual Wanderlust Travel Awards, presented by legendary travel broadcaster Simon Reeve. This year, Wanderlust presented a mix of awards voted for by readers and for industry sustainability.

"Costa Rica has been a favorite of Wanderlust readers for decades, and its 'Pura Vida' mentality and extraordinary natural grandeur have swayed our readers' votes once again in 2022," said George Kipouros, Editor Wanderlust boss, about the gold winner. Silver in this category went to Canada, which displaced last year's winner Australia to bronze.

New Orleans took the gold to the most desired city (rest of the world). This vibrant and exciting city faced strong contenders, such as Tokyo, which took silver ahead of Cartagena.

Readers have voted Greece as the most desired country (Europe). "A summer in Greece has been a rite of passage for many travellers, but our readers are rediscovering a destination that offers an abundance of culture, nature and culinary experiences throughout the year and beyond its famous islands," added George Kipouros.

Dubrovnik was crowned readers' most desired city (Europe), with the medieval jewel of Tallinn in the silver category, followed by the ever-popular Lisbon in bronze.

With the motto "Taking the Road Less Traveled", emerging destinations are always of interest to Wanderlust. This year, Georgia has won gold, while Belize, in Central America, and Saudi Arabia have achieved silver and bronze, respectively.

Palawan, in the Philippines, took gold as the most desired island (rest of the world); Ireland took the most desired island (Europe). The all-time favorites dominated other categories: Favorite Airline went to Singapore Airlines - which has won every year of the Wanderlust Awards - and Favorite Tour Operator (Overall) went to Audley Travel - another multiple winner - with Exodus Travels and Trailfinders. completing the first positions. Sunvil won gold in the category of favorite tour operator (specialty), Journey Latin America silver and Wild Frontiers bronze.

Sustainability has been at the core of Wanderlust since its launch. New categories have been introduced this year that recognize sustainability initiatives, judged by a panel of industry experts. Exodus Travels took gold in the tour operator category, while Le Manoir Aux Quat'Saisons took the accommodation category and Visit Scotland took gold for the tourist office.

Wanderlust also gave a special award to the Trans Bhutan Trail, a restored 250-mile ancient trail that connects many of Bhutan's historic sites. Wanderlust co-founder Lyn Hughes said: "The level of submissions in the sustainability categories has been impressive, with a wide range of innovative initiatives that are making a difference..."
