COMMUNICATION: The SM Foundation launches a project for learning sign language in early childhood

“95% of children who come into the world with hearing problems are born into hearing families. Only 5% of the families of children with deafness use sign language, so it is necessary to teach both children and their parents to use this language. And that learning, in these circumstances, must be offered in an accessible and simple way”, says Rafael Gómez, director of the SM Foundation in Chile.

Precisely with this objective, this audiovisual program was born, which has been produced by an interdisciplinary team in which deaf and hearing professionals have participated. It is especially aimed at deaf early childhood, but also at public linked to areas such as education, the third social sector, performing and cultural arts, human rights, and also families with children suffering from hearing loss.

The materials will be freely available on the YouTube channel of Fundación SM in Chile along with a brief educational guide. In order for this teaching to be much more intuitive, accessible and entertaining for children, and to support those who have the mission of guiding them in their learning, it will use the visual vernacular as a technique.

“This is an internationally understandable technique. It has historically been used naturally and intuitively by the deaf community, long before it was given a name. It is generated through movements, signs, gestures and expressions that imitate the movements of the cinematographic camera, such as the close-up, the panoramic view and various forms of framing, based on Deaf Literature”, explains Viviana Corvalán Armijo, director of the Temporal Lobe Art Laboratory Foundation, which has developed the project. Likewise, voice interpretation of sign language and music is included so that these contents are easily understood by the listening community.

To carry out the project, entities such as: Fundación Olivo, the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture (OEI), the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage of Chile (MINCAP), the National Institute of Human Rights (INDH), the Ministry of Education of Chile (MINEDUC), the San Antonio Cultural Center, the Center for Deaf Educators of Chile, Plaza Espectáculos and Organica Films.
