Hemp Therapy: Demand for cannabis recipes stronger than expected

More and more people are receiving cannabis on prescription and are applying for a cost transfer at ir health insurance. This results from a survey among largest statutory health insurance technicians (TK), Barmer and AOK Federal Association, reports Rheinische Post. Thus, over past ten months, insurers received more than 13,000 applications – and thus more than expected –.

In March 2016, severely ill patients were made easier to access cannabis. It can be prescribed for example in form of flowers at expense of health insurance. But cashiers have to agree. According to law, all usual rapies have failed. Prior to amendment of law, statutory coffers had only come up in individual cases for expensive rapy. Originally, legislators and health insurance companies were expecting almost 700 patients per year who need cannabis rapy.

According to survey, however, up to now 7,600 applications were received by AOK coffers, of which 64 percent were approved. The Barmer reached approximately 3,200 applications by end of 2017, of which almost 62 percent were recognized. The TK has received around 2,200 requests for reimbursement by end of November. Again, approval rate was similarly high at 64 percent.

The federal government's drug commissioner, Marlene Mortler, assessed high number of applications positively. "The increasing number of permits shows how important it was to put this law on road last year," said CSU politician. But cannabis is not a panacea. Before approval of cannabis as a drug, only about 1,000 people in Germany had an exemption for consumption.
