Housing shortage: Singles find scarcely affordable housing in large cities

In 77 major cities of Germany, re are about 1.9 million affordable apartments. This is result of a study on behalf of Hans-Böckler Foundation, on which Spiegel reports. According to this deficiency, people with low incomes who are mainly living alone are affected – and not, as is often thought, families.

According to study, 1.4 million small flats are missing for most affected group. As magazine writes, citing Hans Böckler experts, almost 50 percent of inhabitants of big cities live in single households. But for se 6.7 million people re are only 2.5 million Kleinstwohnungen.

Anor group, for which it is particularly difficult to find suitable housing, are middle-income families and more than five people. According to study, y can only afford 18 percent of housing inventory of 90 to 105 square meters.

The biggest deficiency is one in large cities with many people who earn little, like Bremerhaven – and those with high rental levels like Munich. According to Böckler study quoted by Spiegel, Berlin lacks absolutely most affordable homes for households up to median income – over 310,000. Hamburg is followed by a good 150,000 flats and cologne (86,000). The high-income Munich ranks in fourth place. If you look at federal states, North Rhine-Westphalia lies before Berlin and rich countries of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.

For study, city sociologists and sociologists of Berlin Humboldt University and Frankfurt Goe University compared household incomes and rental prices in 77 German cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants. As a affordable rental charge, you will see if gross rent does not exceed 30% of income.
