Literature: Writer Tom Wolfe is dead

The American writer Tom Wolfe died at age of 87 years. This was reported by New York Times, citing Wolf agent.

Among his most famous works is novel Purgatory of Vanities. Wolfe lived in New York, where he worked for New York Herald Tribune from 1962. He is a co-inventor of new journalism, which combines nonfictional elements with literature.

The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby was his first work of this kind. 1965 appeared, it is considered one of cornerstones of new journalism. Wolf's writing style was far removed from standardized, objective-objective agency style. Like Norman Mailer or Truman Capote, he tried to combine journalism with literary aspirations in his works.

The highly subjective, very concrete and detail-loving describe in America as in Europe influenced an entire generation of renewable reporters.

After graduating from Yale University, Wolfe worked as a writer and reporter for various newspapers, including The Washington Post, The Herald Tribune in New York, and Esquire magazine. He devoted himself to criticism of art and architecture and spoke out against uncritical takeover of European architecture in USA.

From end of 1970s he wrote novels. Purgatory of vanities came to stock market crash of 1987 in book trade. In sharp words, work describes rise and fall of a New York investment banker. The book became a world success. The 1996 published novel A Man in full describes history of aging real estate tycoon Charlie Croker on 960 pages in Wolf's typical noisy pictorial style. Later, essay collections followed and a third novel titled I Am Charlotte Simmons. Some of his books illustrated talented artist himself.

Wolfe received numerous awards, including American Book Award. His works elicited different reactions. Internationally, re were also harsh outlines in addition to praise. The literary critique argued long and fiercely about question of what authority facts have saturated literature.
