The dramatic peaks of Namolokama and Mamalahoa Mountains loom over a verdant valley whose iconic waterfalls capture the breathtaking bounty and beauty of Hawaii's famous "Garden Isle."

BIOPHILIC DESIGN AND INSPIRATION
"If you can't find it in nature, you won't find it here" is the biophilic design principle that inspired the resort's imaginative $300 million transformation, in keeping with the brand's mission to connect people, place, and nature. Native and endemic vines and plants are interwoven with low-impact structures that blend smoothly and seamlessly into their surroundings, making the hotel virtually disappear into its cliffside setting. The multi-year conservation plan replaced alien and invasive species with wildlife-friendly vegetation, such as white hibiscus and nau, native to the Hawaiian Islands. Conscious conservation techniques naturally narrate the sacred history of the Polynesian people, restoring almost a third of the site with native and adapted vegetation.
The lobby, front desk, and open-air entrance take guests on a journey through Hawaiian history and mythology. Much of the original building was removed and replaced with streams and gardens. Reclaimed teak beams, puka lava stone walls, and ceilings handwoven from abaca, a natural leaf fiber gathered from a cousin of the banana tree, are locally sourced.
The oasis' 252 spacious, nature-inspired rooms, including 51 suites, evoke a sense of sacred place and space with flooring handwoven from local black basalt, reclaimed teak and abaca furniture, and traditional punai daybeds. Three spectacular and spacious signature suites - the two-story Puu Poa Ocean Loft Suite, the Napali House Suite and the Makana Penthouse - offer breathtaking views of the ocean and majestic mountains from their private terraces. Every detail of the interior adds a texture that frames the panoramic views - visible through large windows - of the sparkling crescent-shaped bay.
SUSTAINABILITY
Opting for redevelopment over new construction allowed the complex to open up to the sky, warmly embracing the property's stunning natural surroundings while diverting waste from landfills. In collaboration with local partner RE-useHawaii, nearly 150 tons of furniture, fixtures, equipment, and other materials were recovered, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay is on track to function as an oasis that is 100% certified carbon neutral and TRUE zero waste, in line with the brand's other US properties.
The green eco-roofs of the sprawling winged structure reduce and filter stormwater runoff, mitigate heat island effects, and improve air quality through carbon capture. Planted with pili, pohinahina and nanea grass, the rooftops are home to a chef's organic garden where fresh herbs, vegetables and micro-greens are harvested for culinary creations. The treetops are home to candlesticks (kukui), breadfruit trees (ulu) and banana trees (maia), which are suitable for birds and bees, bearing abundant fruit that is served fresh to guests.
