A report prepared by professors from the University Master's Degree in Cultural Management at UIC Barcelona confirms the need to "not only digitize pre-existing content or analogue materials, but also to generate a true digital transformation".

The authors of the study also highlight that Covid-19 has generated "new opportunities", mainly in relation to "audiovisual, cinematographic or video game content platforms, which have triggered audiences".

After contacting the main Catalan cultural institutions, specialists point out that attendance is "irreplaceable" in museums or theaters.

Barcelona, ​​March 22, 2023.- A study prepared by professors of the Master's Degree in Cultural Management at UIC Barcelona is committed to advancing towards "a true digital transformation" in the cultural sector and not limiting itself to "digitizing pre-existing content or analog materials".

The report, entitled 'The management of culture in times of covid-19', points out the need to "create new formats", as some museums have already done after suspending face-to-face visits during the pandemic. Dr. Miquel Bastons, Dr. Marta Crispí, professors of the University Master's Degree in Cultural Management, and Dr. Judith Urbano, dean of the Faculty of Humanities, participated in the drafting of the report.

During the presentation of the study, which took place yesterday afternoon at the Barcelona Campus of the University, Dr. Miquel Bastons pointed out that the pandemic has been "an accelerator of change processes, it has encouraged creativity and digitization to speed up and not only in an aesthetic and artistic sense but also in management, which has become more decisive". However, in his opinion, it is necessary to go further and move towards "a digital transition, which will be slow, expensive and difficult".

The authors of the report have also pointed out that, despite the impact that Covid-19 has had on the cultural sector, it has generated "new opportunities", mainly in relation to "audiovisual, cinematographic or video game content platforms, which have triggered the audiences".

Another of the study's conclusions is the "irreplaceable value" of face-to-face in the creative processes inherent and typical of the cultural sector, after the pandemic forced cultural institutions to temporarily close their doors. The report states, for example, that "the interactions that occur in front of a work of art have a value that cannot be replaced."

In yesterday's event, conducted by Edgar García, director of the Catalan Institute of Cultural Enterprises, various institutions and cultural entities participated, such as the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA), the Generalitat of Catalonia or the National Council of Culture and the Arts (CoNCA), among others. The need for professional profiles in culture with technological competence is growing.

In 2020, the drop in visitors to museums was between 70 and 80%, forcing institutions to create new content and strengthen social networks, according to the report, which also highlights that "a new proximity to the public" and "the community has been strengthened. The urgent need for professional profiles in culture with strong and broad technological competence has also been highlighted.

After contacting almost thirty directors and managers of Catalan cultural institutions to prepare the report, the authors explained that in the last three years "strategic changes that were already planned have accelerated, and that have become urgent with the trends Of future". Public-private collaborations have also increased, as well as the connection with the city, "with projects capable of uniting companies from multiple sectors and administrations".

Likewise, the report includes the economic impact that the pandemic had on the sector, with a drop in income that reached 80% in some private institutions, according to CoNCA data. The reduction in income occurred not only from tickets but also from other services such as restaurants, space rental or merchandising.

The writers of the report are professors on the University Master's Degree in Cultural Management taught at UIC Barcelona. The program has students of more than 70 nationalities and is specially designed for new graduates who want to train as cultural managers, as well as for experienced active professionals who want to perfect their training and improve their management processes and methods.
