- China's Beijing and Chengdu Join League of World's Top 10 Sports Cities to Host Events: Report
EDINBURGH, Scotland, Sept. 6, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Beijing and Chengdu were named number 4 and 8 among global sports cities to host events in a report "Global Sports Cities and the Olympic Ecosystem," recently released by Quantum Consultancy, an international think tank on professional sports, and Durham University Business School.
The report has revealed the top 60 cities based on hosting major multi-sport games and world championships across the sports ecosystem, giving them prestigious recognition as global sports cities for hosting events.
Chengdu, the capital of southwestern China's Sichuan province, is one of two Chinese cities to rank in the top 10 behind Beijing. Beijing was ranked No. 4 due to its "Double Olympic City" advantage. "Chengdu has embarked on an event-hosting strategy that includes two large-scale international multi-sport games in one quick session with the recently concluded 31st FISU World University Games and the World Games in 2025," the report said.
Cities are ranked based on their cumulative event score, which considers the number of events a city has hosted or is scheduled to host between 2021 and 2028, as well as the size, scale, and recognition of these events as part of point-based methodology.
The report analyzed 355 editions of individual events across 95 sports and 156 event properties. In total, 75 Host Countries and 330 Host Cities will have hosted this set of Summit Events between 2021 and 2028, demonstrating a greater diversity in the number and type of destinations that will host these events compared to previous years.
Competition between cities to host major international sporting events is becoming increasingly fierce on a global scale, indicating that winning the privilege of hosting major international sporting events is becoming more demanding and challenging.
Based on the cycle from 2021 to 2028, the report compares and analyzes the major comprehensive sports games and global sporting events held by major cities around the world under the Olympic ecosystem and selects the top 60 cities in the world with high scores in the organization of international events for its launch. Among them, Paris, which will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024, tops the list.
