Global luxury property developer DAMAC International files planning approval application incorporating Zaha Hadid Architects' design for Miami project

Submits two design variations to City Commission for approval

DUBAI, UAE and MIAMI, June 13, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- DAMAC International, a luxury property developer recognized for setting ambitious standards in design and innovation around the world, announces today that it has submitted its application for planning approval to the town of Surfside, incorporating the stunning design of Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA).

This commission marks the second project in Miami for the award-winning British architecture and design firm founded by the late Pritzker Prize-winning architect, Zaha Hadid.

ZHA has produced a couple of design variations for a 57-residence, 12-story oceanfront ultra-luxury boutique condominium at 8777 Collins Avenue. The filing takes place less than a year since the 1.8-acre waterfront property was purchased in July 2022.

Each ZHA project is the highly specific assimilation of its unique context, local culture, programmatic requirements, and smart engineering, allowing the architecture and surrounding urban fabric to blend seamlessly, both in formal strategy and spatial experience. .

"We are honored to have been chosen for this very special project. While no piece of architecture can and shouldn't take away the pain of the past, a truly ambitious piece of architecture can respect such an important site," said Chris Lepine, Principal , ZHA. "It is a great responsibility to deliver this vision for Surfside."

As part of the City's planning application, DAMAC has chosen to submit two variations on a common theme for your consideration. The presentation is based on alternative interpretations of zoning ordinances. The first that intervenes in the South elevation and the second with consistent elevations on all sides. The intent is to provide the City with designs that are in accordance with the ordinances and meet the highest design standards possible under each interpretation.

Both designs feature a duality of twin buildings, with a modulated sculptural form with nested crescents joining at the corners. These soft, cloud-like elements stretch, pull and contract in the ebb and flow of the ocean to animate the façade. The balconies are staggered, never aligning vertically, to give variety to each floor and emphasize horizontal movement. Balcony extensions, shading elements and geometric curves help ensure privacy between condos and their adjacent spaces with a contemporary reinterpretation of privacy zones, a signature detail of Miami Modernism (MiMO) patterned screens that filter the strong Miami sun.

The condominiums, ranging from 4,000 to 15,000 square feet, will provide a variety of living experiences for residents. Community amenities will include a 100-foot rooftop pool that spans the atrium between the north and south arms of the building with direct views of downtown, as well as a 75-foot indoor exercise pool.

"We are pleased to submit our planning application, which submits Zaha Hadid Architects' design variations for city approval," said Niall Mc Loughlin, DAMAC International's senior vice president of communications. "They have raised their own bar once again with these two design variations, expertly weaving form and space to engage the senses and create an unrivaled ultra-luxury experience and a true sense of place."
