Nearly 1 in 3 people who use social media for more than 2 hours a day have the lowest levels of self-esteem. 40% of Generation Z believe they have little self-esteem

Love, and self-love in particular, are essential to enjoy a satisfying life. For this reason, it is key to learn to love well, to become aware that one can love and to do so in a healthy way. However, cultivating self-love when bombarded with images that are far from reality is not easy. For this reason, Deusto Salud reminds us that it is important to take care of the use of social networks, since it can jeopardize the mental health of each person. Thus, with the aim of achieving stable mental health, improving self-esteem can have many benefits for the individual. And it is that, love for oneself, works as a barrier to mental health problems. "Having self-esteem is essential to be able to love others, if there is no appreciation for oneself, it will cost more to love others," says Alejandra Sánchez, a Deusto Salud professor. In the same way, self-love is a key element for the well-being and quality of life of each one. Along the same lines, Deusto Salud shows how data shows that aesthetic pressure significantly reduces the self-esteem of the youngest: more than 4 out of 10 people from Generation Z consider that they have little self-esteem. Similarly, nearly 1 in 3 people who use social media for more than 2 hours a day have the lowest levels of self-esteem. When there is bombardment by images that are far from reality, it is more important than ever to cultivate self-love in an integral way: on a physical, emotional and social level. Tips for cultivating self-love this Valentine's Day, according to Deusto Salud "Love begins with oneself and elevates others. Self-care and self-compassion are fundamental elements to begin to love oneself. One must not fall into the mistake of thinking that having self-esteem means being narcissistic," says Alejandra Sánchez from Deusto Salud. In this sense, 6 out of 10 people around the world would like to have more self-respect. Thus, the Deusto Salud Center for Continuing Education in Health and Well-being proposes four pieces of advice that will serve to work on self-esteem. • Make responsible use of social networks. Taking responsibility for oneself also means knowing how to stay away from social networks whenever necessary. In this sense, the abusive or incorrect use of networks is one of the main sources of low self-esteem. Despite this, it is also important to keep in mind the potentially beneficial uses of social networks: "follow people who can accompany you in the process."• Practice self-care. One of the bases of self-love is to take care of the basic needs of each one correctly. Thus, carrying out healthy activities will serve as a boost to self-esteem: devoting time to oneself is an important source of self-love.• Working on emotional well-being. Self-love is a tandem between physical and emotional well-being. Thus, it will be useless to fight to have satisfactory physical health if you forget to work on the emotional. Accepting the chance of life, getting away from harmful people or setting limits is some of the advice to reap emotional well-being. In this sense, the Deusto Salud Mindfulness course helps to implement relaxation and meditation techniques for emotional regulation • Consult a professional. This option is not only valid for cases of severe low self-esteem. Therapy can be beneficial for everyone, even if they have good self-esteem.
