RELEASE: EchoStar Breaks Ground on Global S-Band Network

(Information sent by the signatory company)

Satellite acquisition and operations planning in Australia for a new Low Earth Orbit constellation to drive smart device connectivity.

DENVER, Feb. 1, 2023/PRNewswire/ -- Today, EchoStar Corporation (Nasdaq: SATS) announced an agreement with Astro Digital, a designer, manufacturer and operator of small satellite systems, to build a global network of mobile services satellite (SMS) in S-band. Under the agreement, Astro Digital will manufacture the satellites of the constellation, which will provide global Internet of Things (IoT), machine-to-machine (M2M) and other data services from 2024. EchoStar will operate the constellation from its Australian subsidiary, EchoStar Global.

"This agreement represents another step forward toward our goal of a global 5G non-terrestrial network," said Hamid Akhavan, CEO of EchoStar. "With our engineering ingenuity, service delivery experience and spectrum rights, EchoStar is uniquely positioned to offer S-band satellite services around the world to help meet the insatiable demand for complete and constant connectivity. "

The 28 satellites in this constellation will have advanced software-defined radio with on-board storage and processing to power smart two-way device connectivity. The satellites will be enabled with the LoRa® (which stands for "long range") protocol to connect very low-cost, long-life devices. With support for 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) services, the constellation will serve as the foundation for EchoStar to design NTN capabilities based on 5G New Radio (NR) according to 3GPP Release 17 specifications.

"These new capabilities will fill a gap in the connected ecosystem, greatly expanding the global interoperability of IoT," said Josh Williams, Managing Director of EchoStar Global Australia. "Our team, along with Astro Digital, have already begun the integration of our Australian-based operations to bring to market a truly global solution with consistent and reliable network performance."

Through its subsidiary EchoStar Mobile Limited, EchoStar also operates an SMS network in Europe using the EchoStar XXI geostationary satellite, which will seamlessly interoperate with the new LEO constellation.
