South Sudan President and ECW CEO Call on Donors to Increase Funding

JUBA, South Sudan and YIROL, South Sudan, June 20, 2023/PRNewswire/ -- Children in South Sudan face grave risks as a result of conflict, forced displacement, poverty and climate change. To address these interconnected crises through the transformative power of education, South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit and Education Cannot Wait (ECW) CEO Yasmine Sherif today announced US$40 million in catalytic grants to extend ECW's Multi-Year Resiliency Program in the South. Sudan for another three years. ECW's total funding in South Sudan now exceeds US$72 million.

"The South Sudanese government is fully committed to ensuring that all children can obtain a quality education. The Education Cannot Wait complementary investment will provide vital educational opportunities for tens of thousands of girls and boys affected by the crisis across the country. To advance this work, we call on world leaders to increase funding for ECW and its partners in the country.This is a critical investment in sustainable development, peace and prosperity for the people of South Sudan. and for children affected by the crisis around the world," said President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

The three-year program will be delivered by Save the Children, the Norwegian Refugee Council and Finn Church Aid, in close collaboration with the Ministry of General Education and Instruction and other partners. It will reach at least 135,000 crisis-affected children with holistic educational supports that will improve access to school, ensure quality learning, improve inclusion of children with disabilities, and build resilience to future crises.

Now is the time to turn the tide and provide the most vulnerable children with protection and the hope that only one offers quality education. "After years of war prevented generations of people from going to school, education in South Sudan remains an urgent priority with only 27% of the population able to read or write, and less than half of the children enrolled in school," said Pornpun Jib Rabiltossaporn, Save the Children's country director.
