The UIC Barcelona International Conference on Biodigital and Genetic Architecture (BIODIG 2023) brings together pioneers in computational research applied to architecture, and members of the international vanguard of current architecture.

BIODIG reflects on pioneering biological and digital solutions to solve design problems that promote more sustainable lifestyles and improve people's well-being.

Barcelona, March 31, 2023.- The 5th International Conference on Biodigital Architecture and Genetics, BIODIG 2023, has brought together architects from all over the world to share their research and experiences in biodigital architecture and design. The conferences took place at the International University of Catalonia (UIC Barcelona) on March 30 and 31. They have explored solutions to the design challenges facing society in the 21st century.

Architectural spaces that "bio-learn" from cellular structures, construction material with shapes created from nature's own algorithms, architectural design and objects generated by artificial intelligence, or the application of digital technology to architecture, are some of them. of the topics that have been discussed in the congress.

The conference has included talks and presentations by leading architects in the field of biodigital architecture such as Karl Chu, Marcos Novak, Neil Leach, Kas Oosterhuis, François Roche, Claudia Pasquero and Marco Poletto, Emeline Raguin, Ferdinand Ludwig, Marcos Cruz, Pablo Lorenzo -Eiroa , Maria Vogiatzaki, Eric Goldemberg, Albert T. Estevez and Yomna Abdallah.

The speakers addressed topics such as the geometry of nature applied to architecture, generative algorithms, bionic design, digital manufacturing and robotics, artificial intelligence, 3D printing and construction, smart cities, virtual and augmented reality, and the Internet of Things in architecture. .

The Conference, which is organized every three years, and Foros, UIC Barcelona's annual cycle of conferences on architecture, have come together this year in a major event on architecture from the perspective of biology and digitization.

This edition also coincides with the 25th anniversary of UIC Barcelona. The participating architects, pioneers in the field of biodigital architecture, highlighted how UIC Barcelona was born addressing these disciplines in 1997.

Reflection on the future of architecture.

Alberto T. Estévez, director of the congress and Professor of Architecture at UIC Barcelona, has emphasized the importance of biodigital and genetic architecture to address critical issues such as sustainability. "Someone has to think about what the future should be; our thanks to the speakers and participants in the conference, who focus their work and research on the future of architecture", says Estévez.

"Our responsibility is to solve the problems of our generation and of the 21st century, such as pollution, the extinction of species, the scarcity of resources, the accumulation of garbage, the thaw or deforestation," explains Estévez.

Estévez adds that "architecture and urbanism must use our knowledge of biology and digital tools to design and build self-sufficient buildings, with passive solar energy, urban agriculture, and that are active machines of sustainability." "In addition," he stresses, "we must think from both an ecological and a social point of view, and apply the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals."

Cristina Monforte, Vice-Rector for Research, Innovation and Knowledge Transfer at UIC Barcelona, and Víctor Echarri, Director of the UIC Barcelona School of Architecture, opened the conference. "25 years ago we started this important line of research. We congratulate Professor Alberto T. Estévez and his research group, committed from architecture, from nature and with the use of computational techniques, to promoting the well-being of people , in line with the values of UIC Barcelona", explained Víctor Echarri at the opening of the conference.
