RELEASE: LyondellBasell and EEW sign letter of intent for possible advanced waste sorting

ROTTERDAM, The Netherlands and HELMSTEDT, Germany, March 27, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- LyondellBasell, a global leader in the chemical industry, and EEW Energy from Waste, a leading European thermal waste treatment company, have recently signed a letter of intent (LOI). The LOI includes exploring a potential long-term strategic partnership to extract and recycle plastics from incineration waste streams. This collaborative proposal would potentially include construction of waste pre-sorting facilities at or near EEW incineration plants to remove plastics from waste streams destined for incineration, and investment in advanced sorting facilities for further sorting. and refining the extracted plastic. This collaboration supports LyondellBasell's new strategy to invest in advanced sorting infrastructure to produce raw materials based on plastic waste, grow its Low Carbon and Circular Solutions business and fulfill its value creation ambitions.

"Collaborations across the value chain are part of our strategy and are increasingly necessary to free up plastic waste from sources that today do not end up in recycling," said Yvonne van der Laan, Executive Vice President of Low Emission and Circular Solutions. LyondellBasell Carbon Center. "Materials from these sorting facilities would not only support our existing mechanical recycling facilities in the Netherlands and a potential advanced recycling unit in Germany, but also allow us to optimize waste streams and drive additional value. ".

This collaboration would close the cycle of plastics that today are sent to be incinerated, classifying them for use as raw material in mechanical and advanced recycling processes. By removing these materials from the incinerable waste stream, the fossil CO2 emissions associated with their combustion are also avoided.

"With this cooperation, we are creating a compelling solution to plastic waste that is still out of the question for recycling today," said Bernard M. Kemper, CEO of EEW Energy from Waste. "EEW will first build a sorting facility and select the plastics to recover for the feedstock cycle."

The planned cooperation represents a breakthrough in recycling opportunities, using LyondellBasell and EEW sites and know-how to enable a sustainable circular economy.

EEW: an indispensable part of the circular economy

EEW Energy from Waste GmbH (EEW) is one of Europe's leading companies in the field of thermal recovery of waste and sewage sludge. EEW Energy from Waste is already making a significant contribution to climate and resource protection and is a key player in the circular economy. Our business group currently operates 17 plants that can process around 5 million tons of waste per year. The more than 1,400 employees of our plants guarantee the use of energy stored in waste, the reduction of the volume of waste, the safe elimination and without negative impact of the dangers caused by waste and the recycling of scrap metal and composite materials. . In addition, we efficiently use the energy contained in waste to generate process steam for industrial plants, district heating for residential areas, and environmentally sustainable electricity. In line with our vision for the future, we have set ourselves the goal of being climate neutral by 2030 and climate positive by 2040. A key measure, in addition to carbon reduction, will be carbon capture at our facilities. The captured carbon will be stored partly underground or used as valuable feedstock for chemicals in a carbon neutral economy of the future.
