RELEASE: Malteurop launches to conquer new markets with the inauguration of a new malthouse in Mexico

REIMS, France and MEOQUI, Mexico, October 19, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- The VIVESCIA Group, a French cooperative group in the agri-food sector with a presence in 25 countries around the world, inaugurated this Wednesday, within its malting activity, a new malting factory in Meoqui (State of Chihuahua, northern Mexico), in the presence of all the parties involved in the project.

Malteurop, the first operator in the malt industry to invest massively in Mexico, thus accelerates the conquest of new markets in this country, adopting a virtuous "grain to glass" approach. In addition to the investment of 112 million euros in this new malthouse, Malteurop has implemented 100% local sourcing in the last three years by partnering with around 500 local farmers for the production of malting barley.

In the words of Christoph Büren, president of the VIVESCIA Group, “this new malting house brings to light all the good French industrial and agricultural work, while responding to local economic needs and the challenge of sustainability. During the implementation of this new malting production center, Malteurop's agronomic and varietal development teams have launched a 100% local malting barley supply chain. “This is an extension of our original business model implemented in the territory of the VIVESCIA cooperative in France.”

For Olivier Hautin, general director of Malteurop, "this new plant, equipped with an annual production capacity of 120,000 tons of malt, which could be expanded to 150,000 tons in the future, will allow us to meet the needs of brewers in a especially buoyant market but deficient in malt, a strategic ingredient in beer production. “This project illustrates Malteurop’s unique and recognized ability to develop new industrial projects around the world.”

A virtuous ecosystem: contributing to the development of a local barley-malt-beer value chain

Over the past three years, Malteurop has forged partnership agreements with around 500 farmers to introduce a new crop – malting barley – to allow them to diversify their crops. Malteurop's good work has made it possible to identify the varieties of malting barley best adapted to the region in collaboration with the VIVESCIA cooperative teams, which have supported and disseminated the best agroecological practices and low-carbon techniques among farmers. All of this confirms once again the group's commitment to a rigorous climate strategy to reduce its carbon footprint and work towards regenerative agriculture.

Mexico, a large importer of malt, is currently one of the countries with the highest growth in beer consumption in the world (8% in 2022). With its new malthouse in Meoqui, Malteurop is positioning itself in a virtuous local ecosystem with a short, more sustainable supply chain, all together with its farming and brewing partners, in particular Heineken, whose new site is located next to the malthouse.
