Philips technology incorporates an IVUS catheter that allows highly accurate visualization of the interior of blood vessels for both diagnostic and vascular surgical applications.

Málaga, March 7, 2023. Hospital Quirónsalud Málaga is the first private medical center in Spain to use Philips IntraSight 3 Mobile, a system that allows the visualization of intravascular ultrasound images to treat vascular diseases such as ischemia, aneurysms or thrombosis. .

The platform has an intuitive interface that makes it easy for professionals to use. "This new-generation console, easy to use and very reliable, allows us to maintain our position on the operating table without having to go to the IVUS console," acknowledges Dr. Alejandro Rodríguez Morata, head of the Angiology and Vascular Surgery Service. and Endovascular Hospital Quirónsalud Málaga. In addition, it provides them with much more comfort, "it allows us to turn and rotate the images that could not be done before," he adds.

Reference in the use of IVUS

The Philips IntraSight platform allows the connection of IVUS catheters allowing highly accurate visualization of the interior of blood vessels for both diagnostic and vascular surgical applications. “The IVUS catheter has formidable navigability, it is very intuitive, easy to use and highly recommended”, in the words of Dr. Rodríguez Morata.

Specifically, the Quirónsalud Málaga Angiology, Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Service is a benchmark in the use of this innovative technology for the diagnosis and treatment of Vascular Compression Syndromes. It is also worth noting its use in venous pathology, where it provides data "that are essential to be able to perform a high-quality procedure, and exact measurements depend on it," the doctor points out.

“When we do a conventional phlebography, we observe apparently circumferential venous paths, but in reality with the IVUS we can observe from within that these same veins have a more ovoid than circumferential arrangement. In this way, it is difficult to know what real measurements an abdominopelvic vein has in the phlebography, because without IVUS, these measurements are somewhat estimated ”, he specifies.

Training in the treatment of abdominopelvic venous pathology

Training is another of the priorities of Quirónsalud de Málaga. For this reason, since 2016 it has a program of workshops for the treatment of abdominal and pelvic venous pathology. “In all of them we have diagnosed and treated, when appropriate, May-Thurner and Nutcracker syndromes, thus bringing these infrequent diagnoses closer to vascular surgery colleagues from other provinces interested in the matter”, points out Dr. Rodríguez Morata.

In this sense, the Philips Intrasight 3 Mobile platform has been designed to facilitate these training programs and quickly integrate new users, as well as to maintain the competence of the personnel in cases of venous compression.

Currently, the Malaga hospital continues to organize courses, although, as confirmed by the head of the Vascular Surgery Service, "already with a more institutional perspective, from the platform offered by the Endovascular Surgery Chapter of the Spanish Society of Angiology and Vascular Surgery ”.
