Madrid, November 17, 2023 - Philips Iberia, a world leader in health technology, has brought together radiology experts in Madrid for the first edition of the Iberia Spectral Users Meeting. The objective of the meeting was to create a forum for debate around the use and adoption of spectral technology, highlighting its diagnostic accuracy compared to conventional CT.
This event organized by Philips Iberia, in which radiologists, heads of radiology, C-suite and radiology administrators participated, has facilitated the sharing of knowledge and experiences, as recognized by Dr. Javier Alarcón Rodríguez, head of the Radiodiagnosis Section at the Ramón y Cajal Hospital in Madrid. “This interaction can facilitate the resolution of doubts, the improvement of protocols and the optimization of the equipment. I believe that it is an activity that results in a final benefit for the patient and that should be promoted.”
Philips has promoted this first meeting with the intention of creating a community in Spain and Portugal where spectral technology and its clinical applications are debated. As explained by the head of the Image and Health IT Business at Philips Iberia, María Felpeto, the objective from the beginning has been to “share innovative cases that have a real impact on patients and raise awareness about the importance and benefits of this type of technology over others.”
New uses of spectral technology
The new uses and horizons of spectral technology in pathologies typically diagnosed by resonance have focused part of the day. Some benefited areas are prostate, cardiology or digestive system. As the head of the Ramón y Cajal Radiodiagnosis Section has reflected, “the advantages are innumerable” within the spectrum of cardiothoracic pathology. Among them he has cited the evaluation of coronary stents, “patients with high coronary calcium load” or carriers of devices such as pacemakers whose artifacts can be minimized with the different spectral maps.
In the field of oncology it is also extremely useful, since it allows determining the degree of vascularization and quantifying the iodine concentration of different lesions. “This makes it easier for us to differentiate between benign and malignant lesions and determine the degree of response to treatment. In addition, thanks to this technology, the contrast dose and radiation dose are reduced.”
Greater confidence and security in diagnoses
The Ramón y Cajal Hospital has this innovative technology thanks to the Philips Spectral CT7500, an intelligent system that provides high-quality spectral images for each patient in each examination and at all times. “The possibility of always having spectral information gives a lot of confidence and security when working,” said Dr. Alarcón.
There are many advantages it offers over a conventional CT scan. as María Felpeto explained, since it helps to improve the visualization and characterization of tissues and reduces follow-up examinations, all with the same dose levels as usual examinations. “This equipment allows for greater diagnostic certainty, the visualization of incidental findings and shorter study review times,” she pointed out.
Finally, unlike spectral options based on an emission source, Spectral CT7500 has two detection layers sensitive to high and low energy photons. The detection of high and low energy photons is carried out simultaneously, which allows complex studies to be carried out in which there is a lot of tissue movement, such as in cardiology.
