- Shanghai Electric completes Pakistan's largest locally fueled thermal power project, Thar Block-1 integrated coal mine and power project, in 30 days
Two high-parameter 660 MW supercritical units completed a 168-hour full-load reliable run test that can meet the electricity needs of nearly 4 million local households
THAR PARKAR, Pakistan, March 6, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- The Thar Block-1 integrated coal mine and power project ("the project" or "Thar Project") of Shanghai Electric (SEHK: 2727, SSE:601727 ) in Pakistan officially entered commercial operation on February 5, 2023, after both units successfully passed the Reliability Performance Test after 168 hours of full-load operation. The project will provide some 9 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity to the local grid each year, meeting the demand of almost 4 million homes.
"The project represents Shanghai Electric's first Build-Own-Operate (BOO) project, developed, built and operated with a total investment of nearly US$3 billion. Since construction began in March 2019, we are delighted to have boarded effectively address the local power shortage problem with our technology and complete solutions.Through our partnership with local stakeholders and using local fuel, we are making significant contributions to lower energy prices, improve energy infrastructure, alleviate the crisis energy import and strengthen national energy security," said Donghai Meng, Director and CEO of Thar Coal Block-I Power Generation.
The project, with a total capacity of 1,320 MW, is supported by an open pit coal mine that annually produces 7.8 million tons of lignite (brown lignite). The project includes advanced technology equipment, such as high-parameter steam turbines, generators, tower-type boilers, high-pressure heaters, low-pressure heaters, condensers, deaerators, 108 support motors, blowers, induced draft fans, exhaust fans, refrigeration fumes and low temperature economizers, all supplied by Shanghai Electric. It will serve as a benchmark for future Thar energy utilization thanks to its custom-designed technology that is tailored to Pakistan's local fossil fuel needs.
Empowering the local community
The Thar Project not only represents an important milestone for Shanghai Electric, but also contributes to the social and economic development of the local community. In addition to providing more than 15,000 jobs during construction and paying more than $120 million in taxes, the Project has provided professional training for local employees and donated funds to establish a Chinese language school for international cultural exchanges. This commitment to improving the lives of local people, protecting the environment and promoting economic development has brought new vitality to the Thar region, demonstrating Shanghai Electric's dedication to building projects that empower communities.
The project is a testament to Shanghai Electric's commitment to collaborate with local stakeholders to create long-term sustainable solutions, and involved multiple rounds of discussion and consultation with local government, village chiefs and resident representatives to guarantee a stable electricity supply throughout the life cycle of the open pit mine. With the objective of promoting green construction by adopting a sprinkler irrigation system to improve the green construction of the open pit mine, the project also helped the local government to resettle the indigenous population of the mining area, improving their living conditions and their access to drinking water and electricity. By prioritizing local collaboration and sustainable development, Shanghai Electric has set a new standard for responsible energy solutions.
