-Supermicro adds ARM-based servers with Ampere® Altra® and Ampere Altra® Max processors for cloud-native applications

Performance-optimized servers in the Supermicro MegaDC family, along with Ampere® Altra® and Altra® Max CPUs, help reduce operating costs through innovative architecture

SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 22, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Supermicro (NASDAQ: SMCI), a total provider of IT solutions for cloud, AI/ML, storage and 5G/Edge, announces an expanded product line with an exciting new series of ARM-based servers as part of the MegaDC family. Powered by Ampere Altra® and Ampere Altra® Max processors, the Mt. Hamilton platform leverages a unique unified motherboard design, targeting cloud-native applications such as cloud gaming, video-on-demand, CDN, IaaS, database data, object storage, dense VDI and Telco Edge solutions (distributed unit and centralized unit). In addition, the new servers address several goals for cloud-native workloads, specifically delivering high performance per watt while running scalable workloads and those that require very low latency responses.

"Supermicro continues to strengthen our product line by introducing ARM-based servers using Ampere Altra and Altra Max CPUs," said Ivan Tay, Supermicro's senior vice president of product management. "Expanding our already broad line of server products gives customers even more options for their specific workloads. We can quickly deliver optimized application servers for customers around the world using our Building Block Solutions approach."

Supermicro's MegaDC ARM product lines utilize a building block design featuring a single-socket motherboard paired with an Ampere Altra or Altra Max CPU with up to 128 cores per server (currently the highest core count in the industry for servers), up to 4TB of DDR4 Memory, and a modular design that supports unmatched options for maximum I/O, PCIe, and storage.

The Supermicro MegaDC product line includes a range of single-CPU Ampere Altra or Altra Max servers, in a 1U or 2U form factor, with up to four double-width GPUs or up to 24 hot-swappable U.2 NVMe drives. 2.5". In addition, the systems include a built-in redundant 25GbE SFP28 Ethernet network using NVIDIA Mellanox CX4. Engineered with highly efficient air cooling, the ARM-based Supermicro line of servers has been certified for ambient temperatures up to 95°F (35°C) for Enterprise and 131°F (55°C) for Edge applications.

"In collaboration with Supermicro, Mt. Hamilton is bringing Ampere's dense and efficient computing to a broad set of use cases from the core cloud to the distributed edge," said Jeff Wittich, Ampere's chief product officer. "By leveraging Ampere's Cloud Native processors, Mt. Hamilton enables 2-3 times more performance per rack on common cloud native workloads, helping customers better meet cloud scalability demands now and in the future".
