A framework for successfully executing sustainable patient engagement strategies in the lifecycle management of medical devices and diagnostics

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Jan. 31, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- The MedTech Patient Engagement Think Tank today announced the launch of the Playbook for Patient Engagement at MedTech in the US. It is a collaborative initiative of MedTech members Patient Engagement Think Tank, including 3M, Abiomed, Boston Scientific, Exact Sciences, Insulet, Smith Nephew, Center for Patient Advocacy Leaders (CPALs), MassMEDIC, and Alira Health. The Playbook is the result of the amalgamation of ideas, research, findings and insights from industry subject matter experts who together formed the Patient Engagement Think Tank at MedTech, an unprecedented 18-month collaboration with top-tier MedTech industry leaders.

The Playbook offers practical information on how the MedTech industry can successfully incorporate patient engagement activities into each stage of the diagnostic and medical device development product lifecycle. Ideas include how MedTech stakeholders can leverage bidirectional patient engagement strategies to ensure that patient experiences, perspectives, and priorities are meaningfully captured and incorporated into product lifecycle management. The main pain points, opportunities, value propositions, and stakeholder group activities in the manual cover clinical development, regulatory and market access, pre- and post-marketing, as well as a co-design methodology focused on the patient for medical technology that ensures that products and solutions meet the needs of patients, improve outcomes and maximize market access.

Patients, as well as caregivers, providers and patient advocate partners, are in a unique position to contribute to the development of medical devices and diagnostics. Properly executed patient engagement strategies can meet your needs, improve outcomes, and maximize market access. The time has come for medtech industry leaders to establish industry-wide expertise and infrastructure and standardize on sustainable, patient-centric strategies. Leveraging the strategies outlined in this manual will help raise industry awareness of patient engagement activities throughout the product development lifecycle, accelerate patient engagement efforts, and drive business success while satisfying significant unmet needs.
