- Think tanks call for innovation in responsible sourcing of minerals and metals in Africa, West and Central Asia

- Future Minerals Forum (FMF) partners the Development Partner Institute (DPI) and Clareo jointly publish a compelling new document that focuses on the importance of responsible mineral sourcing. They call for a multi-sectoral and multilateral approach, and underline the role that Saudi Arabia and the Africa and West and Central Asia region could - and should - play as a spearhead of innovation.

RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA, Dec. 14, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- On the eve of the second edition of the Future Minerals Forum (FMF), to be held January 10-12 in Riyadh, the Development Partner Institute and Clareo urge industry to fully maximize and develop close collaboration with stakeholders. The joint document underscores the need to standardize environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles to address critical issues, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions and moving towards creating an economy free of fossil fuels.

With more than 600 ESG reporting provisions instituted around the world, DPI and Clareo underscore the importance of the work done in bodies such as the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), announced at COP26 last year.

The organizations urge the mining industry to take a universal but flexible approach, adopting international standards while taking local factors into account. Their model brings more clarity to what they call "the current difficulties in reporting on ESG."

DPI and Clareo point to the role Saudi Arabia can now play in supporting the creation of a universally adopted set of principles that support adequate, affordable, safe and responsible sourcing of minerals.

They argue that with considerable support and commitment on these issues, the kingdom is in a unique position to foster a triangle of trust between government, communities and mining companies. They identified three specific areas where Saudi Arabia is poised to make the biggest impact.

Peter Bryant, president of the Development Partner Institute and Clareo (specialized in ESG innovation) explained in the document:

"Addressing this challenge requires a change in mindset, an investment in innovation and, most importantly, a multilateral approach that takes into account the objectives and incentives of each of the agents in the value chain."
