Right-wing populism: Grünbein criticizes Suhrkamp as left-Liberal skewers club

The comments of writer Uwe Tellkamp during a discussion round at Dresden Palace of Culture last week triggered a discussion on rights positions in public debates. Now Durs Grünbein, who was sitting on podium with Tellkamp, expressed himself in time (15 March 2017): "What we heard from Tellkamp has been known to us for years by participants in Pegida demonstrations." These included "Islamophobia, fear of or, conspiracy fantasies, diffuse social fears".

During event in context of campaign capital of Culture Dresden 2025 (Video), Grünbein and Tellkamp talked about social issues of present, refugee crisis, changes in society and federal politics. Tellkamp had articulated his unwell-being on basis of numerous examples. He spoke of a "system" led by a government that "lost control" and "journalists who are in advance on a government line". Grünbein had, among or things, replied that he did not feel a "alarmist mood".

The Suhrkamp Verlag, in which both Tellkamps and Grünbeins books appear, had gone a few days later at a distance to Tellkamp. "The attitude expressed by authors of house is not to be confused with that of publisher", Publisher commented on Twitter. This holds Grünbein for an "absolutely false signal". The publishing house is now a "left-liberal Club of skewers" and has thus "only confirmed prejudice of dictatorship", he said of time.

Tellkamps assessment that re is a censorship of opinion in Germany does not share Grünbein. Those who articulate this accusation most loudly "are now sitting in Bundestag and can fire from all pipes in a journalistic". However, what has been "undoubtedly" for some time is "a mental prudery, an alarmism that is deplorable".

Durs Grünbein and Uwe Tellkamp to background

Last week, writers Durs Grünbein (55) and Uwe Tellkamp (49) delivered a blow exchange at a discussion conference on freedom of expression. Tellkamp criticized federal government's refugee policy and lamented a "corridor of disposition". The Suhrkamp Verlag subsequently pointed out in a tweet that " attitude expressed in statements by authors of house is not to be confused with that of publisher" – an unusual way of Distanc ing a publisher from its author. Uwe Tellkamp was not ready to talk with time.

Grünbein also spoke about Thilo Sarrazin and his German dispute. The controversy over publicist in 2010 was a "original sin" media hystericization. "Instead of dealing with book in which re was a lot of discrimination, author was demonized," he said. That made him "stunned". He wants "urgently a rehabilitation of Sarrazin as a human being".
