STATEMENT: Companies prepare for the war on plastic

Madrid, December 15, 2022

In recent years, the number of companies, brands and companies that offer more environmentally friendly alternatives has increased. According to Diego Cordido, CEO of Agua enCaja Mejor - the first brand of water packaged solely in cardboard in Spain - "companies have to set an example for society"

The arrival of the new year will mean that, since the last chime, companies are forced to comply with the Law on waste and contaminated soils for a circular economy, better known as the 'Plastic Law' due to the restrictive measures imposed on this material. The ban on the marketing of certain single-use plastics, more obligations for producers such as two new green taxes or the objective of eliminating 20% of bottles in 5 years are some of the aspects that most alarm companies. Spain It is the fourth country in the European Union with the highest demand for plastics, where 50% of it ends up in landfills. This law, which comes late at the request of Europe, aims to reverse this situation and achieve the goals set in Brussels, and it seems to be only the prelude to future legislation that will be increasingly severe for plastic, recycling and waste generation. For this reason, more and more companies are anticipating the war against plastic and deciding to use alternative and recycled materials for their packaging. The bottled beverage industry is, without a doubt, one of the sectors that is at the point of look. According to Diego Cordido, CEO of Agua enCaja, "companies are the first to set an example in terms of sustainability so that society tries to reduce the use of plastic in its daily life. Today, there is the possibility of buying any thing in recycled and sustainable packaging". Agua enCaja is the first brand of water packaged solely in cardboard in Spain, which was born in 2017 with the aim of achieving a more ecological and sustainable alternative to plastic. Its packaging is made with renewable resources, from natural forests -with the FSC certificate- and is 100% recyclable, representing ZERO CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. In addition, the little plastic that she uses for the stopper is of vegetable origin, coming from pine oil. Like her, in recent years the number of brands, companies and companies that, out of obligation, necessity or responsibility with the planet, have proliferated. They offer more environmentally friendly alternatives for all types of products. And the fact is that the data leaves no room for doubt; carton-packaged water contains 80% less plastic than conventional bottles. In addition, cardboard packaging takes much less time to degrade than plastic. It is a clear example of how companies have to adapt to a constantly changing environment, since they are aware that awareness of the amount in use and consumption of plastics in the daily routine has skyrocketed. Businesses and industry now face the challenge of introducing reusable products and raw materials in their production processes to mitigate the negative impact they have on the environment, if they do not want to be affected by a regulation that has only begun to take its first steps. .
