STATEMENT: Corderex plans to certify more than 100,000 kilos of lamb meat this Christmas

Mérida, December 21, 2022.- The Regulatory Council of the Protected Geographical Indication Cordero de Extremadura 'Corderex' plans to certify more than 100 thousand kilos of lamb meat this Christmas, which represents an increase of 5 percent compared to the previous year . This growth in consumption is led by the Horeca channel, which has experienced a slight increase compared to the previous year thanks to the increase in celebrations outside the home.

Consumption habits show the progressive return to the pre-pandemic era since a transfer of consumption from home to restaurants is reported. "Without the restrictions due to the pandemic, people go out more and, therefore, the consumption of certified product in restaurants is being greater and a drop in consumption destined for homes is expected," adds Raúl Muñiz, technical director of Corderex.

In this sense, Corderex launches the campaign on social networks 'CORDEREX returns to your table for Christmas' whose objective is to promote the consumption of certified lamb meat in homes during Christmas. "With this campaign, what we want is to bring Extremadura Lamb to all the tables in Spanish homes on these very important dates and enjoy a dish as typical as Extremadura Lamb as a family," Muñiz points out.

The Spanish market continues to be the main demander of Lamb from Extremadura and Madrid and Extremadura are the areas where they are most consumed, representing 80 percent at Christmas and 50 percent overall for the year.

The IGP Cordero de Extremadura is one of the most important lamb certifications in Spain and produces more than 60,000 lambs a year under its quality seal. During the Christmas holidays, 30 percent of the lambs certified annually are consumed. "From Corderex we fight especially in the deseasonalization of its consumption and we start up and support initiatives that promote the consumption of lamb meat throughout the year", as indicated by the technical director.

In addition, the PGI Cordero de Extremadura works continuously to promote its certified meat in campaigns on social networks, the media, collaborations with other denominations of origin and presence at fairs such as this year's participation in the 'Feria del Spanish Lamb' held in Tokyo.
